The United Kingdom has reached a decision to remove Nigeria and other countries from its travel red list following the breakout of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron.
Recall that the UK government had placed Nigeria and other African Countries on the travel red list following the confirmation of the Omicron variant in the affected nations.
The red list had triggered reactions from the Federal government, who claimed that the UK government was unjust in its decision and had vowed to take action if the decision was not reversed.
Speaking to the UK parliament on Tuesday, the UK Health Secretary, Sajid Javid said the Omicron had spread so widely that the rules were now less effective.
According to him, “Now that there is community transmission of Omicron in the UK and Omicron has spread so widely across the world, the travel red list is now less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad.”
“Whilst we will maintain our temporary testing measures for international travel, we will be removing all 11 countries from the travel red list effective from 4 am tomorrow morning”.
