Suspected cultists kill father, son in Akwa Ibom community

Suspected members of a cult group have murdered a father and son in the Ikot Ibekwe community in the Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

The duo was hacked to death over the weekend, by the dreaded Iceland confraternity in their family compound, Nigeria Tribune reports.

According to a family source, the cultists came to kill Prophet Kufre Obonukut (son), when he raised an alarm that prompted his father, Chief Ephraim Jacob Obonuku to go and save him.

“But the criminals turned and also attacked hit the father on his head and other parts of his body with a machete.” the source said.

Another family source also explained that murder might not be detached from the fact that Kufre, who was the founder of Last Bus Stop Church (LBC), Ikot Ibekwe, was an object of envy by some Church founders in the area.

According to the source, the prophet was accused of luring members from other churches through miracles.

“It is very sad to miss a father and a son at the same time. At the moment, the mother is bedridden. The prophet had been buried while the father is to be buried later because of his chieftaincy status,” the source said.

Confirming the event, the spokesperson of the State Police Command, Odiko Macdon, said “discreet investigations are ongoing to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the incident.”

He also enjoined citizens to volunteer intelligence to security agents to help apprehend the culprits, whom he said are still at large.
