Crisis in Rivers PDP as thousands threaten defection over councillorship primaries

Ninety percent of members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Omuma local government area of Rivers State, has threatened to defect to opposition parties over the choice of the leadership of the party in the LGA to conduct Councillorship Primaries by selection and not by election.

The Councillorship primaries which was slated to hold today across the ten (10) Wards in LGA saw most of the party offices in the Wards under lock and key, as members were unable to exercise their franchise of voting the candidate of their choice.

Our correspondent gathered that some PDP Ward members expressed anger over the outcome of the primaries. They threatened to decamp to other political parties if the anomaly was not immediately corrected.

According to report, there was crises in Ward 5 as some party members engaged in arguments and physical combat due to the primaries not holding as expected.

The aggrieved Ward members also called on party leadership in the LGA to stop election by selection and allow Ward members make their choice of candidates.
