APC hails Labour for shelving protest, asks Wike to eschew ‘gunboat politics’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Rivers State has applauded the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) for their firmness and steadfastness with their requests to the Governor of Rivers State.

The party in a statement by its factional publicity secretary, Ogbonna Nwuke said the NLC and its associates demonstrated uncommon maturity and discipline in allowing last minute discussions.

“Accordingly, the breakthrough recorded at the late night meeting is plainly as a result of the unique sacrifice made by labour in the overall interest of the state and nation.

“While we welcome the resolutions reached at the end of that very crucial meeting, it is our expectation that the Rivers State Government under the watch of Governor Nyesom Wike would fulfil its promise to workers.

“The government must have a human face and all of us have a responsibility to evolve for mankind, a kinder and responsive system that is understanding, just and fair. We hope that the Governor of Rivers State would learn lessons from this. His administration had no reason whatsoever to threaten sons and daughters of Rivers State who are part of the labour movement; and who are rendering essential services to the people of the State.

“We thank labour leaders for doing the needful. They have proved that the interest of the working class was more paramount in the decision they took to call out workers.

“We call on the Wike administration to eschew its gunboat politics. It has no place in an egalitarian society and no place in a society that hopes to embrace a system of social responsibility. We cannot afford to have government which abhors the spirit of our Constitution while pretendng to act under the guise of promoting the Rule of Law.”
