Vice President Yemi Osinbajo-led Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC) has urged the federal government to mull over the possibility of suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp exercises for two years.
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), had last week, said the suspended 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One Orientation Course which was suspended due to Coronavirus pandemic would be completed when the Scheme receive the green light from the Presidential Task Force (PTF).
NYSC suspended the 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One Orientation Course just one week into the exercise in March as a proactive measure to avert the spread of COVID-19 to any of the Orientation Camps.
The committee in the final report its report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari recommended the consideration of suspension of NYSC camps for 24 months, The Cable reported.
“The immediate focus in the Education sector is to address the disruptions caused by the pandemic and ensuing social distancing measures at all levels of education,” the report read.
“Practical steps will be taken to minimise disruption to learning, utilising technology as appropriate. Specifically, virtual learning will be implemented (either online or through broadcast), virtual convocation ceremonies or issuance of certificates (with postponed ceremonies) should be implemented to continue educational progression.
“In similar context, consideration will be given to suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp Exercises for at least 24 months while allowing deployment to places of primary assignment.
“This will ensure that there is no backlog in the National Service placement pipeline.”
