Cultists invade Ogoni community, shoot sporadically over land dispute

Some suspected cult groups on Friday invaded Uegwere Boue community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, shooting sporadically.

The reason for the attack was attributed to an alleged land dispute with neighbouring Yeghe community, adding that the gunmen came from Yeghe community.

It was gathered that it took the effort of the police led by the DPO in charge of the LGA to chase the attackers away.

Confirming the incident to our correspondent, an indigene of the attacked community, S.D Kanee said: “Yesterday (Friday) in my community, Uegwere Boue in Khana LGA, we had series of gun shots at about 5. 30pm.

“We saw cultists suspected to be Degbam and Dewell invading my community from both ends.

“We later discovered that these cultists came from Yeghe community to attack our community.

“We called the security agencies and the Divisional Police Officer in charge of my LGA came with his men and the cultists fled.

“We believe that these cultists are being sponsored by some persons.

“Yeghe people have attacked our community before, killing over five members of my community at deferent time and date, some period ago.

“Their reason was that we took their farmlands which is not true and they have decided to use violent assault on us to possess the farmlands they are claiming to be theirs.”
