Coronavirus lingers in air for 30 minutes, study finds

A man who infected people two seats behind him on a long bus journey has led Chinese epidemiologists to conclude that coronavirus can linger in the air for at least 30 minutes and travel up to 4.5m, much farther than the safe distance advised by health experts.

A new academic paper, published in a Chinese journal called Practical Preventive Medicine, revealed the case of an infected passenger, identified as “A”, who managed to infect ten others on a long-distance bus ride into the province of Hunan in January.

One passenger who felt ill two days after the journey boarded the same bus, but 30 minutes after A disembarked. The bus was not disinfected during the half-hour interval when it waited for the return trip.
