Police arraign 27 youths for protesting murder of mechanic in Port Harcourt

There was a mass arraignment of youths on Thursday by personnel of the Rivers State Police Command for allegedly rioting Ikoku Junction along Ikwerre Road, Port Harcourt.

The defendants whose ages were between 19 to 40, were accused of committing the offence on January 20, 2019.

They are part of the over 30 persons arrested for protesting the murder of late mechanic, Chima Ikwunado, by the Eagle Crack Unit of the Rivers State Police Command.

In charge number: PMC/157c/2020, the defendants were slammed with seven-count charges before a magistrate court in Port Harcourt.

However, only Anthony Godspower Johnbosco ‘m’ was charged for unlawfully causing grievous harm on one Zakari Mohammed ‘m’.

Count seven said: “Johnbosco stabbed Mohammed with a bottle on his neck and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 335 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol. 11, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria.”

Some of the defendants are: Chukwu Ifeanyi ‘m’ 28yrs, Lucky Maduborchi ‘m’ 36yrs, Ubong Evans ‘m’ 30yrs, Jude Obaji ‘m’ 29yrs, Egwuagu Jude ‘m’ 28yrs, Emeka Barnabas ‘m’ 30yrs.

Others are: Edeh Maxwell Ebuka ‘m’ 31yrs, Onyemauche Anyanwuocha ‘m’ 39yrs, Ndifreke Okon ‘m’ 25yrs, George Ibietela Ibiso ‘m’ 21yrs and Onyekachi Nzeakor ‘m’ 29yrs, among others.

The riot offence upon which the defendants were charged to court are punishable under sections 516, 71, 517, 70, 88, and 249 (d) of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol 11, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999, respectively.
