Gunmen free two police officers 3 months after their abduction in Andoni

Two Police Officers, Gift Ojimini and Godwin Anwuri alongside a boat driver, Festus Friday have been released by their captors in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, almost 3 months after they were abducted.

They were kidnapped while on patrol along the Ngo River in Andoni area on 8th October 2019.

Sources in the area said the gunmen also attacked fishermen at Oyorokoto Fishing settlement and carted away two 40-horse-Power engine boats on the day of the raid.

“They were heading to the Asarama/Ebukuma Bridge where they usually station to protect commuters travelling to neighbouring towns and villages of Andoni mainland when they were kidnapped” a local source who did not want to be named told theportcitynews.

The boat driver, Festus Friday, is a father of three from Andoni Local Government Area.

His family told theportcitynews in November that they have been been in a state of anguish since his abduction a month ago.

The Kidnappers only made contact with the police division for the first two weeks after they were kidnapped, demanding a ransom for the victims.

ASP Godwin Anwuri, father of five from Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State was the leader of the police duo.

His family had expressed displeasure with the slow rescue effort of the police.

Community sources said the security situation in the area became worse after rival cult gangs intensified attacks on towns, villages and marine travellers.

Nnamdi Omoni, the police public relations officer said on the day of the abduction that the force had dispatched teams to arrest the hoodlums and rescue the officers unharmed.

It is yet clear if any ransom was paid for their release.

The Police PRO did not respond to inquiries for comments as at the time of filing this report.
