Ogoni Youths Federation, OYF has written the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), requesting the services of the agency in curtailing the humanitarian crises faced by indigenes of some Ogoni communities.
The National President of OYF, Comrade Yamaabana Legborsi, in a letter to NEMA which was made available to theportcitynews, lamented the invincibility of the agency in Ogoniland despite the crisis rocking the region.
“Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF) is pained by the frequent killing and dynamiting of houses going on in Ogoniland. Everyday Ogoni people are trapped and encircled by forces of anarchy, Ogoni people groan in pain and bleed under the terror of marauders.
” In the past five months, about 200 persons have been killed, thirty eight houses burnt and five communities deserted. The situation is a serious humanitarian crisis as families are rendered homeless and means of livelihood destroyed. The people are in urgent need of relief materials and palliatives to ameliorate their plight and the provision of such relief materials remained one of the primary functions of NEMA” OYF stated.
The youth group wondered why people from the region were abandoned and allowed to suffer during their times of need.
“We wonder why NEMA is yet to take any concrete step concerning the aforementioned, despite adequate budgetary allocations. At a point, we began to wonder if we are still part
of Nigeria because Since the commencement or this incident, we have not seen any of the interventional agencies like NEMA, and the rest.
“NEMA was basically set up to promote equal opportunities for all Nigerians irrespective of affiliations on the grounds of religion or Ethnicity. But NEMA has always been seen rushing in with relief materials to victims of disasters in the North East. But when disaster occurs in the Niger Delta NEMA wIll keep mum.
” In view of the foregoing, we write to your good office to take immediate action by providing relief materials to the victims of Ogoni crisis for the sake of humanity within a reasonable time.
“Failure to come to the aid our people wIl eave Our organization with no option but to organize civil action to drum this inhuman neglect”
