The Rivers State Swimming Association says it will soon introduce grassroots swimming competition among schools in Rivers State.
The Chairman of Rivers State Swimming Association Charles Nwoye during a swimming competition in Port Harcourt said the aim is to develop the sports at the grassroots.
”We need to go round the 23 local government areas. Our drive is to organize a championship for the 23 local government areas and to organize inter-house swimming competition and also introducing swimming competition to schools so as to become part of the school curriculum. In other to achieve that swimming pools must be at the reach of schools in Rivers State” Nwoye said.
Charles Nwoye said the association will work with local government authorities to build swimming pools across the 23 local government areas of the state.
”Also we want to reach all the local government chairmen in Rivers State to at least build a swimming pool in the areas so that students can go there to train. We will also, send our coaches to the local government areas to nurture the sports at the grassroots”.
He also, appeal to spirited individuals and corporate organizations to assist the Swimming Association in their bid to revive the sports in the state.
Charles Nwoye stated that rivers are not the best place for young swimmers to learn the basics of swimming.
The Chairman of Rivers State Swimming Association added that most swimmers contact different infections and diseases in their various rivers and called for a stop of such practice in the state.
