Why I didn’t attend Ogoni day celebration -Pygbara

Leborsi Pyagbara, the faction president of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, MOSOP, has said he did not attend the Ogoni day celebration due to alleged arms buried at the venue.

Pyagbara who spoke at the movement’s office in Port Harcourt said his absence became necessary as it averted a possible bloodbath.

Speaking further, Pyagbara criticized the federal government for its failure in cleaning up contaminated areas in the region, adding that any attempt to resume exploration of crude oil in the region as planned will cause crises.

Our correspondent reports that the 27th Ogoni Day Celebration which held at Bori, the traditional headquarters of the Ogonis, was disrupted by fighting from different groups.

The leadership crisis in the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has deepened, causing the body to split into five factions with presidents emerging in the different groups.

The body was founded in 1990 with the mandate to campaign non-violently to protect the environment of Ogoni and promote democratic awareness. The factional presidents spoke from different venues during this year’s Ogoni Day celebration, an event usually observed on January 4.
