A 40-year-old housewife, Maryam Ogedengbe, who allegedly beat her co-wife and inflicted injuries on her, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
Ogedengbe, a resident of No. 8, Thomas Lane, Agege, Lagos, was charged with assault.
The Prosecutor, ASP Clifford Ogu, told the court that the accused assaulted Mrs Kuburat Ogedengbe by beating her and hitting her head and neck with an object, following a disagreement.
Ogu said the accused committed the assault at 9.00p.m. on Nov. 14 at their residence.
He said that the accused injured her rival on the head and neck.
“The accused and the complainant were having an argument; before the complainant knew what was going on, the accused used an object and hit her on the head,” he said.
The offence contravenes Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised), according to Ogu.
The section stipulates a three-year jail term for assault.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr J. A. Adegun, granted her bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.
Adegun said the surety must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The chief magistrate adjourned the case until Dec. 11, for mention.
