The outcry of anguish by some mothers and wives whose husbands and sons were arrested by the police last week, disrupted court proceedings at the Isiokpo magistrate court.

The makeshift dwellers along Sani Abacha road in Port Harcourt, told our correspondent that their husbands and sons were partaking in the state monthly sanitation exercise when policemen stormed the area and whisked them away.

They said: “One state monthly sanitation day, we were at home carrying out sanitation exercise. A team of policemen stormed our premises and arrested our husbands and sons. We are appealing to relevant authorities to help free our innocent husbands and sons”.

According to the prosecution, the defendants were arrested by the police for allegedly threatening to kill one Chief Lawson Chukwuicheta with guns and the kidnap of one Darlington Chukwuicheta among others.

Counsel to some of the defendants, G.B Sanusi said the charges levelled against his clients by the police were aimed at denying them justice in order for them to languish in jail.

“The charges against my clients are just too many which has already raised doubts as to whether the police are saying the truth or not”, Sanusi said.

The suspects numbering 20 were remanded in prison custody by the court on grounds of jurisdiction.
