As part of the streamlined activities to commemorate this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) globally, Care and Development Center (CADEC), a healthy lifestyle promotion Non-Governmental Organization based in Port Harcourt, on Saturday, organized a sensitization rally/ market outreach in Bori main market of Khana Local Government Area and Choba market in Obio/Akpor local government area.
Addressing newsmen during the rallies, Mrs Omorodion Rhoda, the state Executive Director of the organization said their choice of the marketplaces as centres for the rally is to reach out to a larger crowd of women from different works of life, especially the female traders in Ogoni land.
She said that breast cancer can be prevented when detected early.
According to her, if women know the DOs and don’ts of their daily routine, what they consume and are also conscious of their genetics or hereditary traces in respect to the history of previous breast cancer or cancer-related issues, as well as the environment, they will not fall victims to breasts cancer.
She equally said signs and symptoms of breast lump/ physical symptoms are when one notices a sudden difference in any or both of the breasts. Such symptoms include Lumps in the breast, Breast appearing like orange dots, Colouration of the nipples, the hardness of the breast, breast or nipple retraction, etc.
Mrs Omorodion strongly advised that if any woman notices any of the sudden signs or symptoms, she should immediately go for cancer screening services or for medical advice and not to take or rely on self-medication, nor resort to quarks or spiritual homes.
She encouraged women to seek professional medical advice in one of the approved cancer screening facilities or from CADEC for proper advise.
She said cancer can affect any woman regardless of age, religion or class. She, therefore, advised women to go for early cancer screening so as to help ascertain every woman’s state of health.
She said “Although the actual cause of cancer has not been discovered, the risk factors of cancers are hereditary (genetic), hazardous environment, alcohol, smoking, use of some contraceptives, giving birth at a very early age, e.t. c
She said that for now, breast cancer can be managed if only women(both young and old), will be responsible enough to come out to be screened to ascertain their health Status.
She further advised that for those that are already noticing the above symptoms should immediately seek professional medical help.
She also warned that not all hospitals are adequate in the treatment or handling of this expensive ailment, but rather such women should seek help from government approved facilities.
The Executive Director also expressed profound gratitude to its funder, TrustAfrica, for lending a helping hand to the organisation when it needed help most.
