Sex workers protest police harassment in Eleme

Commercial sex workers have protested their continuous harassment and extortion by security agents in the Eleme area of Port Harcourt.

The sex workers said the continuous harassment by security agents in their line of work has become unbearable necessitating the protest.

Some of the sex workers who spoke to theportcitynews correspondent said the activities of the security agents, especially the police have greatly affected their income.

According to one of the sex workers who identified herself as Princess, “These policemen, they come here every night and collect 1500 from each person. We are about 30 here. Imagine how much they make every night.

“We pay for rooms and buy condoms for the men who patronize us. We buy other things to make sure our job is done neatly too. We cannot do all these and afford to pay police 1500 every night. We have people who depend on us and also have other bills too and with these extortion, we can’t afford to save for retirement”

“Another sex worker who spoke to our correspondent said it’s as if they are working for the security agents because they threaten them with arrests if they fail to comply.

“We want the government to come to our aid. We are tired of working for nothing. How can I sleep with men throughout the night just to give the money to the police?” she said.
