Team Rivers arrive Ilorin for National Youth Games

Team Rivers Contingent for the 3rd National Youth Games has arrived Ilorin ahead of the competition. The Team departed Port Harcourt Saturday morning around 5:30 am and arrived Ilorin around 1 pm.

Team Rivers Contingent will participate in 32 events out of the 33 sporting activities that will feature at the competition.

The Commissioner of Sports, Rivers State, Boma Iyaye, while addressing Team Rivers Contingent before their departure at the Alfred Diete Spiff Sports Complex charged the athletes to make the state proud by winning medals for the state.

Boma Iyaye said the State Government provided an enabling environment for the athletes to thrive at the games and tasked them to reward the state by picking every single medal at the event.

He also said that the State Government will provide scholarships to athletes that will win medals at the event, stressing that the gesture would boost the morale of the athletes to go the extra mile to achieve success.

The Commissioner noted that the National Youth Games is a good platform for most of the young athletes to nurture their dreams of becoming global stars in the future.

He, however, tasked the contingent to be good ambassadors of the state in Ilorin.

Responding, Director of Sports Council of Rivers State, Evang Ezekiel Ordu said the athletes are in good shape to make the state proud at the games.

Ezekiel Ordu stated that the coaches have done their best in grooming the athletes ahead of the competition.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Cricket Coach Tonye Timinadi and Gymnastics Coach Frank Nsiegbe said their teams will win laurels at the games.

They said that the athletes have gone through a series of test games to prepare them for the National Youth Games.

The opening ceremony of the National Youth Games will hold on Monday 10th September 2018 at the University of Ilorin Sports Centre.
