Sequel to the Thursday’s election by the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Rivers State council, Stanley Job has emerged as the new chairman of the Union.
Stanley Job emerged the winner at the just concluded 6th triennial delegates conference in Port Harcourt with a total vote of 135 against 46 votes of his opponent. Mrs. Ossai Uche Ifeoma was elected treasurer with a total vote of 110 against 60 votes of her opponent and for the office of NUJ state secretary, Ike Wigodo won with a total vote of 125 against 47 votes of his opponent.
Addressing journalists after the election, the New Rivers NUJ Chairman, Stanley Job, said his mandate is to fulfill three cardinal points of welfare, accountability, and fairness.
He assured journalists that during his tenure as Chairman, he would ensure vigorous training and retraining of journalists as well as better management of funds.
He said: “We want to ensure that the union’s money is well managed and the council is properly managed, not a situation where some people are giving responsibilities and they cannot keep to their promise of accounting to the members of the union as stated in the constitution”
On his part, President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Honour Sirawo, urged the new executive to meet the expectations of the electorate, saying that he expects something better than what was there before.
“I expect something better than what we met. If those who were here had done better, people would have asked them to do a second tenure. It is also on us not to elect them and stay away. We elect and follow up to see they do what they are asked to do because any mistake they make that is wrong affects our collective destiny”
