The Nigerian Senate, on Wednesday, for the first time, read the bill for the establishment of Federal University of Environment, Science and Agriculture to be sited in Ogoni, Rivers State.
The bill which was sponsored by the Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Magnus Abe, seeks to support the proposed Centre for Excellence in Ogoniland as recommended by the United Nations Environment Programmes on Ogoni Environment.
Commending fellow Senators, especially those in the senate committee on environment, Abe said that the establishment of the Federal University, once passed into law, will save funds for the country and sustain the dream behind the center for Excellence recommended by UNEP.
He said that the UNEP report provides for a center of excellence and having looked at the centre of excellence, it is supposed to be a place where the study into environment will be made, not only for the Ogoni area but for the entire country.
He appealed to his colleagues to ensure that the University is established as there is no Federal University in the Ogoni area.
