Following the directive from the Federal Government for the review of excise duty on tobacco and alcoholic drinks, the chairman of Nigeria Hotel Association Rivers State Chapter, Mr. Eugene Nwuzi, has expressed displeasure over the directive, stressing that it is an attack to the hospitality and tourism industry in the country.
Mr. Eugene Nwuzi in his reactions said that Federal Government would have focused on security and power which are the major challenges the country is facing , saying that Federal Government should have a rethink.
Mr. Nwuzi also said that alcohol consumption is a choice as it is not everybody that consumes alcohol and cigarettes.
He reiterated the fact most people do not take alcohol and cigarette but they take soft drinks that contain sugar. So most people that patronize the tourism and hospitality industry may not be able to afford the money when these taxes are placed on them as it will be a setback to the tourism and hospitality sectors.
He also noted that the state government charges them 4%, and now Federal Government has placed 5%, even when the country is facing economic challenges.
He called on the Federal Government to reduce the cost of power so people can do their normal business and more people can be employed because most hotel owners cannot afford the light bills levied on them.
The chairman commended the power sector for increasing its capacity from 2000 to 4000 mega watts but however maintained that they should make it affordable to the people and tackle security problems in the country.
